A large-scale search and recovery mission is currently in progress in the Caribbean waters for a duo of lost sailing vessels carrying humanitarian supplies traveling from the Mexican coast to Cuba.

Maritime Search Operations Deployed

The Mexican government has sent naval teams and military search aircraft to locate the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were carrying no fewer than 9 personnel, as stated by a official statement.

The ships had been projected to reach Cuba's capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and zero verification of their docking, authorities reported.

Context of Relief to the Island

The island nation has leaned on Mexico's over the past few weeks, as the country struggles through multiple national electricity failures.

"The skippers and their teams are seasoned mariners, and each boat are fitted with proper safety equipment and signalling equipment," a spokesperson associated with the mission said.

The nine-person crew are from the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexican authorities said it has been in touch with coast guard agencies from each country along with their diplomatic representatives.

"The group is co-operating fully with the authorities and remain confident in the ability of the crews to safely arrive in Havana," the spokesperson added.

Recent Humanitarian Mission

Previously that week, the government in Havana warmly welcomed and officially received a separate vessel that had delivered 14 tons of donated goods to the country.

That ship, nicknamed "a new Granma" in reference to the vessel in which the revolutionary leader came back to Cuba to begin the Cuban Revolution in the mid-20th century, carried solar equipment, pharmaceuticals, formula milk, bikes and food.

Wider Political Backdrop

Charity groups and individuals have largely spearheaded attempts to ship essential supplies to Cuba since January, coinciding with the time a fuel embargo on the island nation was initiated.

International organizations have since warned of "dire" supply shortages, with more than 50k surgical procedures postponed in Cuba because of power shortages.

Diplomatic measures have intensified in recent months, with remarks from different leaders underscoring the complicated state of diplomatic ties.

In response to certain statements, a senior Cuban official insisted that "the socialist system of Cuba is not up for negotiation."

Indications suggest that initial phases of discussions had begun, although their ongoing development remains uncertain.

The maritime authorities affirmed it was pledged to using the full extent of its capabilities at its command to discover the boats and ensure the well-being of the sailors.

To date, there has been no public statement on the lost ships by the Cuban leadership.
