Last year, actor Jude Law remarked he had no concerns about backlash for portraying the Russian leader in a new film. The movie, however, could coincide so closely with the carefully constructed version circulated by official channels that, domestically, it functions as a compliment rather than a critique.

The Manufactured Strongman

Over a long period, the Russian political apparatus and the country's entertainment industry have collaborated to craft a made-to-measure version of the president. This character is an infallible strategist without age or mistakes, an ex-intelligence officer reimagined as a local 007 who always knows more than he reveals.

Cinematic Reinforcement

A notable instance is a television show released last October, helmed by a pro-government filmmaker. Its main character is a invented blue-eyed lieutenant colonel selected by fate to “save” Russia from disorder. While the character's name a different name, the message is clear: the savior must be a known figure from the secret services.

International depictions frequently result in reinforcing this identical story instead of debunking it. A new film based on a bestselling satirical novel aims to undermine the leader's mythology by framing him not as a cause but as a consequence, moving the narrative weight to the spin doctors surrounding him.

The Fable of the Hesitant President

In the film, the president is presented as having been picked by powerful oligarchs to stabilise the nation because he is “a fit former intelligence agent”. The oligarchs approach him and all but beg him to take the top job. His response is that he would rather govern from the background, desiring permanent power.

This tale is the Kremlin’s export myth: the detached, unwilling mastermind guided by fate. In reality, none of this took place.

The Reality of the Casting Call

Nobody ever begged him to accept the role. The presidency was effectively a selection process with many candidates. Central to the selection stood a powerful businessman from the previous administration who planned to control the country in practice.

Edited images swapping Craig’s face with his appeared on city centers, fueling the increasing trend to see him as a local secret agent.

A Propaganda Win?

Given the casting, an actor well-liked by viewers there, the authorities are likely to seize the chance to frame his casting as a small victory. Its omission of mass protests, the opposition, or key figures in the story, despite covering recent years, is a pleasant bonus for state propaganda.

Domestically, Putin is frequently an all-powerful presence who remains unseen on screen. He is signaled through portraits or orders from on high. Now, he finally acquires a recognizable face—one that could unintentionally echo the exact legends it perhaps aims to examine.
