This occurred on a weekend morning, and I found myself sufficiently irritable, refueling my mother's vehicle. The location was a common fuel stop that operates as a supermarket, meaning there's a chance of joining a queue people bearing baskets of pricey provisions. A terrible fate to unfold when all you want is to get gasoline and leave. Awful.
My position was fourth in the waiting line. Just one cashier operating, a female attendant. Something stood out about her. When the faffer at the head of the line had completed payment for his Viakal, his sausage roll, and his box of eggs, I was certain overhearing the cashier tell him an excellent day. Unusual. Maybe it was a mistake, or perhaps she spoke and meant it ironically. The thought crossed my mind if perhaps she was a comrade in the war on delays, echoing my disdain for individuals slowing down straightforward customers including me.
I moved up, to third in the queue. The new leader of our line discharged her fuel-only transaction with commendable speed. Again, the phrase came: “Wishing you a marvelous day.” To be precise, it was “enjoy a truly great day”. An American? In Stourbridge? She had the accent, and no British person wishes anyone a wonderful day, or merely a pleasant day. Highly unusual. You don’t get people from America knocking around Stourbridge, certainly not employed at gas stations or other places.
Now I stood second. Behind a poor older woman engaged in a lengthy struggle with her carryall, her food items, her wallet and her loyalty card. This took an eternity. Once completed, she as well got told an excellent day. Definitely from the US. Confirming it was possible by saying something hilarious at the cashier, to check for that thing their typical stare, unsmilingly, and say with absolute sincerity: “You are very amusing.” Yet no idea came of anything hilarious to say.
Ultimately, I accepted the heartfelt tone – or a mimicry of sincerity, essentially the same as identical in effect – while she stared me right in the eye, to my very core, and bid me an awesome day. It improved my mood. Beneficial indeed.
