Advocacy Collective Claims to Have Scraped Countless of Audio Tracks from the Streaming Giant

An activist organization has stated to have harvested a vast number of tracks from Spotify and is getting ready to release them publicly.

Possible Impetus for Artificial Intelligence Training

Observers noted the apparent leak could aid AI companies searching for data to train their models.

A group called Anna’s Archive said it had obtained 86 million audio tracks from Spotify and 256 million rows of associated data such as artist and record names. Spotify, which hosts more than 100 million tracks, confirmed that the breach did not represent its full catalog.

“We have identified and deactivated the nefarious user accounts that were involved in unlawful scraping,” said a company representative.

The Stockholm-based company, which has more than 700 million subscribers worldwide, further explained that an inquiry into unauthorized access found a third party collected public metadata and used questionable methods to circumvent DRM protections.

Group's Stated Goal and Worries

The streaming service does not believe the audio taken by Anna’s Archive has been made public yet. Anna’s Archive, which is known for offering links to pirated books, said in a blog it wanted to create a ‘preservation archive’ for music.

The group claimed the music files represented 99.6% of all music streamed to by Spotify users and would be shared via ‘torrents’, a means of sharing large data files online.

“Of course Spotify doesn’t have all the music in the world, but it’s a fantastic start,” commented Anna’s Archive, which frames its purpose as “safeguarding humanity’s knowledge and culture”.

Model Development and Intellectual Property Debate

Ed Newton-Rex for defending artists’ rights, remarked the breached music would probably be used for developing AI models.

“Educating models on pirated material is unfortunately common in the tech sector, so this stolen music is almost certain to be used instructing AI models,” he stated.

The group's website alludes to a large online archive, a huge online repository of copyrighted books that has reportedly been leveraged by Meta to develop its systems.

A founder of an artificial intelligence company wrote on the professional network that individuals of the public could in principle “create their own personal free equivalent of the service”. The executive added it could also allow technology firms to “educate models on modern music at a large volume”.

Intellectual property law has emerged as a key issue between creatives, writers and creatives on one side and AI companies on the other.

Policy Considerations and Responses

In the UK, artists and writers have protested against a ministerial proposal to allow AI companies use copyright-protected work without permission unless the rights holder opts out. Almost every participant to a government call for evidence on the proposal has backed artists’ apprehensions.

A government minister for technology, innovation and development informed parliament this month there was “little consensus” on the matter, adding that ministers would “use the time to get this correct”. The administration has pledged to make regulatory plans on AI and copyright by March 2025.
