An Tale of Unexpected Kindness: When a Student Allowed Me to Stay on Her Dorm Floor
During 2006, I made a trip to Canberra for an interview at a medical college. My plan was to book accommodation after getting there, yet when I arrived, a big convention was in town and all the backpackers hostels and cheap hotels were fully booked.
Hailing from Singapore, I considered maybe I could just sleep at the terminal – but quickly found that airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, closes around the clock. Unsure of quite what to do and growing worried, I caught a city-bound bus and began walking near a gaming venue, thinking I could pass the night in a place that was open all night. That wouldn’t put me at my peak for acing a crucial interview the next day, however, being a broke student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.
The world needs more people like that woman.
It seems I seemed out of place since a female student noticed me wandering around the city center and asked if I was OK. I explained my predicament and right away she offered I could crash on the floor at her university residence at ANU – a perfect solution, as that’s where the important interview would take place the next morning. She went further by offering a meal: one of the sandwiches she had taken home her part-time job. This gave me the bathroom and somewhere safe and secure for the evening.
With hindsight, I now understand the enormous leap of faith she took as a woman allowing a man who was a complete stranger crash at her place. Back then I existed within my own unawareness and did not consider to such safety concerns. As a dad now, I’m amazed she took that chance – and remain very grateful.
I didn’t end up attending that university, and I lost touch with the student afterwards, but her act remains etched in my mind her amazing act of human compassion. I hope karma has returned her act of kindness many times over. Our society requires more folks who show such kindness.
