Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Ben Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in several conversations in the wake of his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

But, after the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment after his side suffered a loss in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a notional target of 435.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

This series will be completed in just 11 days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns against the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
