England to Begin the European Championship 2028 Quest at the Etihad Stadium

England’s men’s team will commence their Euro 2028 campaign at the Manchester City’s stadium, on the condition that they secure the relatively straightforward passage for a competition taking place in the majority of the UK and the Irish Republic.

The Etihad Stadium has not hosted an England men’s fixture since eight years ago, when the Turkish team were beaten 2-1 in a warm-up game, but is almost certain to host the England side for their first match on June 10, 2028.

England are planned to play their final two group matches at the national stadium, but, if they top Group B, their round of 16 match would take place at Newcastle’s St James’ Park. Placing second would mean commencing the knockouts at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Competition Kickoff and Demonstration

The championship was inaugurated at an ceremony in Piccadilly Circus on Wednesday evening. High-ranking officials from European football’s governing body and the host football associations were heckled as they arrived the site by around fifty protesters, who demanded Israel’s national side to be expelled from global football because of the situation in Gaza.

Banners were raised with phrases reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while protesters shouted: “Kick Israel out.”

Event Schedule

The inaugural fixture of the tournament will be played at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, on June 9, 2028, a match that will involve the Dragons if they qualify.

The national stadium will host the two semi-final matches and the final, which will be staged on Sunday 9 July with a start time at 5:00 PM.

It is hoped that an earlier kick-off, which will also be adopted for European club finals from next season, will attract family audiences and help reach a more diverse set of viewers.

Host Nations

The Irish team are scheduled to play their first game at the Dublin stadium and the Scottish team would play similarly at Glasgow’s Hampden Park.

The national sides of all four hosts will take part in the qualifying tournament; two automatic spots will be set aside for any that miss out on Euro 2028 through the standard process.

Stadiums and Elimination Phase

The Birmingham venue and Spurs’ ground finalize the event’s nine venues. All will hold at least one playoff fixture, with the quarterfinal matches played at each country’s national stadium.

The draw for the qualifiers will be conducted in the Northern Irish capital, which was excluded as a venue city last year when it was revealed the Belfast stadium could not be upgraded in time, on December 6, 2026.

Official Statement

“It will be a competition for the supporters and a celebration of everything we cherish about the sport – its emotion and ability to unite individuals.”

In excess of three million admissions, a record for a men’s European Championship, are projected to be released to fans.
