Milan Hockey Venue Setbacks Could Force NHL Stars on Unproven Ice
Forget about poor conditions. For now, the surface isn't ready.
With NHL athletes gearing up to make a comeback to the Olympics for the initial occasion in over a decade, building work on the main hockey arena for the Milan-Cortina Games is going down to the wire.
Officials confirmed on Wednesday that the primary test event for the 16,000-seat Santagiulia facility that was scheduled for December has been relocated to a more compact venue – and that no additional trial has been scheduled yet.
The issue creates the possibility that there may not be a match held in the main arena until the competition begins for the women’s preliminary round at the Olympics on 5 February – 24 hours before the opening ceremony.
“The timeline will be very close to the beginning of the games, the timeline is very tight. However, we were aware,” Milan-Cortina local organizing committee CEO Andrea Varnier said recently.
The competition that was intended to evaluate the Santagiulia playing surface was a segment of the under-20 world championship from 8-14 December. That event has been transferred to the Rho Fiera hockey location, which is being established inside a massive convention center on Milan’s outskirts and will stage lesser games during the Olympics.
Usually, new Olympic venues are trialled at least the year before to holding podium competitions. And with a sizable hockey arena, it’s not just about the ice and ensuring that the playing surface is ready and secure. It’s also about checking food outlets, restrooms and everything else inside a newly constructed modern arena.
This new facility, which is being built by a private company, is scheduled to become Italy’s biggest covered stadium. For after the Olympics, it’s being considered as a possible upcoming venue of the ATP Tour Finals tennis event.
Despite the delays and worries, high-priced passes are already being sold for matches at the Santagiulia venue. Seats for the men's championship game on 22 February – the final day of the games – are going for as much as €1,400 (over $1,600). That’s more than the price of any other sports event at the Milan-Cortina Games. Only passes for the opening and closing ceremonies cost more.
The return of NHL stars at the Olympics was announced last February, with the premier hockey league allowing its players to compete in the Winter Olympics for the initial occasion since 2014 in Sochi.
Men's Olympic hockey competition is scheduled to run from 11-22 February. The women’s tournament occurs from 5-19 February.
