Red Cross Assists Militant Group in Search for Remains of Captives in Gaza

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) stated that its representatives accompanied members of Hamas into zones of the Gaza Strip currently controlled by IDF control to facilitate the hunt for the remains of Israeli hostages.

Truce Agreements and Hostage Remains Return

As part of the US-brokered ceasefire, which took effect on October 10, Hamas is obligated to return the bodies of all Israeli hostages as soon as possible. In exchange, the Israeli government has consented to transfer the remains of 15 Palestinians for each Israeli.

Hamas has so far returned the remains of 15 of those taken hostage but none in the last five days, as a portion of those remains are believed to be in areas beyond the yellow line designating Gaza’s ceasefire.

ICRC Involvement as Impartial Facilitator

“At the request of the involved sides, the Red Cross joined a participant in the hostilities as the party searched for the remains of the deceased beyond the IDF-designated ‘yellow line’,” stated a spokesperson for the committee.

She added: “Those involved to the hostilities determined the procedures of the mission and entrusted the Red Cross to serve as a neutral intermediary. We was not involved in those negotiations.”

She additionally explained: “Our team was did not participate in the physical hunt for the deceased nor does it take part in the physical recovery of human remains.”

Global Legal Standards and Responsibilities

According to global legal norms, it is the responsibility of the sides engaged in a hostilities to search for, gather, and recover the bodies of the deceased.

US Demand and Local Recovery Operations

Recently, the American leader delivered a two-day demand to the militant group. “Hamas is going to have to start handing over the remains of the deceased hostages, which include two Americans, quickly, or the additional nations involved in this great peace will intervene,” he wrote on his social‑media platform.

When the two-day window approached, the group, joined by the Red Cross, joined Egyptian teams, who were authorised by Israeli authorities to search for bodies past the boundary marking the withdrawal of troops inside Gaza. An official representative said the Egyptian team would use excavator machines and vehicles in the search.

Official Verification and Media Reports

The news was corroborated by an unnamed Israeli official, who told Hebrew-language media that Hamas representatives had been permitted to access areas of Gaza under military authority to search for the bodies of captives, alongside Egypt’s and Red Cross teams.

“To achieve this goal, representatives were permitted to pass the designated boundary,” the source was cited as saying.

Video published by a media outlet appeared to show members of a specialized group – part of the group’s military wing tasked with holding hostages – escorting a Red Cross vehicle in a specific location near a southern city, which lies outside Israeli military control.

Difficulties in Finding Captive Bodies

Efforts to locate for the bodies of individuals taken captive has turned into one of the most delicate issues in the truce reached between the two sides. However, the effort to locate the bodies has proved challenging from the outset, given the existence of an approximate enormous amount of rubble across the territory, where, as per local health authorities, at least ten thousand residents are listed as missing, trapped under the rubble.

Conflicting Claims on Remains Whereabouts

The group has claimed it lacks information on the precise locations of all the bodies, saying it has lost contact with a number of its teams that had been detaining the hostages and were reportedly killed during military strikes.

However, an official representative claimed that the organization was aware of the whereabouts of the bodies. “If Hamas made more of an effort, they would be able to retrieve the remains of our captives,” the spokesperson said.

American Stance and Weapons Surrender Talks

While the American leader has conceded that a portion of the bodies are difficult to reach, he said that “others they can hand over now and, for some reason, they are failing to do so.”

“This could be related to the disarming of the group,” he added.

The US administration has said it has received guarantees from Hamas that the group will surrender its arms, though no specific schedule has been set. The militant organisation remains reluctant to surrender its arms without solid assurances about the fate of its members.
