South African Player Wessels Handed Nine-Game Suspension for Inappropriate Contact

The player will be unavailable for the Springboks' upcoming test matches.

South Africa prop Wessels has received a ban of nine matches for grabbing opponent Josh Murphy's private parts during the Blue Bulls' United Rugby Championship victory over Connacht.

The incident happened in the 18th minute of the narrow victory in Galway on last Friday, with Connacht forward Josh Murphy receiving a 20-minute red card after responding aggressively by hitting the South African on the head.

Following Murphy complained to referee Mike Adamson, the contact was checked by the TMO, who found insufficient clear footage.

The Bulls player stayed on the field until he was replaced in the later stages of the game.

While the United Rugby Championship confirmed that Murphy's temporary sending-off was rescinded by a governing body, Wessels was found to have breached law 9.27, which declares:

"Any athlete must not do anything that is against the principles of fair play. This includes touching, pulling or compressing the private areas."

Disciplinary officials were satisfied that the event met the red card threshold and justified a 12-week suspension, the shortest suspension under World Rugby rules for such an offence.

However, the player's ban was reduced by 21 days because of his cooperative behavior prior to and at the hearing and his clean disciplinary history.

The forward and the Bulls are entitled to challenge the decision, but currently, the suspension will prevent the young player out of the Springboks' fall internationals against the Brave Blossoms, Les Bleus, the Azzurri and the Irish team.

He will also miss the his club's URC games against Warriors, the Lions and the Cell C Sharks, as well as European cup games with Bordeaux and Saints.

Wessels has earned 10 caps for South Africa and was included in their Rugby Championship-winning team over the summer.

Murphy, in contrast, is available to play against the Irish rivals in Saturday's inter-provincial derby after being exonerated.
