Suspected Bondi Beach Gunmen Operated Alone and Received No Instruction in the Philippines, Investigators Confirm.
The two suspected attackers who carried out the deadly incident at a Jewish celebration on Bondi Beach, resulting in 15 lives, are believed to have been lone actors, as stated by national law enforcement.
Authorities further stated that Sajid Akram, 50, and his son Naveed Akram flew to the Philippines on 1 November. Their itinerary involved arriving in the capital Manila before traveling onward on the day of arrival to Davao City. The duo flew back to Sydney on 29 November.
Lack of Proof of Preparation During Visit
Police have stated the individuals did not undergo any type of terrorist instruction or "planning" during their time in the Philippines. Preliminary inquiries from local officials suggest they "rarely left" their hotel.
The attack—labeled as Australia's worst firearm massacre since 1996—has been officially declared a act of terrorism.
"We are actively examining the footage," the commissioner stated, explaining that early assessments show that "the two men are alleged to have been lone actors."
Australian Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett briefed media on Tuesday that surveillance material documenting the accused attackers' movements in the Philippines had been handed over to domestic authorities.
"There is no evidence to suggest these suspects were members of a broader organization, or were acting on orders from overseas entities to execute an act of violence," Commissioner Barrett emphasized.
However, the pair were also not necessarily in the Philippines on a leisure trip, Commissioner Barrett clarified. She underscored that, as the inquiry is ongoing, new evidence might come to light.
Ideology and Legal Proceedings
In prior statements, the nation's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese commented it appears both accused gunmen were "influenced by ISIS" beliefs.
During the incident, Sajid Akram was fatally shot by police. He and his son Naveed—reportedly carrying rifles—allegedly shot guests at the Hanukkah celebration.
Naveed Akram, who was hospitalised after the shooting, has been charged with 59 crimes. These include 15 charges of murder and one count of committing a terrorist act. He is expected to appear in court in April.
Immigration Particulars
In the days following the attack, immigration officials in the Philippines reported that the father had arrived in the country using an foreign passport, while his son used an domestic passport.
The two had stated the metropolis of Davao as their intended endpoint. Their scheduled journey back to Australia was for Sydney.
Davao is a sprawling city on the east of Mindanao, the Philippines' largest island in the south. The region is known because, Islamist fighters have been known to be active in impoverished parts of central and south-western Mindanao.
