Tetris Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Might Solve This

Each time a major honors show draws close, you'll find a demand for the addition of new categories to honor unsung work and fill the passions of fans who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer has already made supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories actually cover numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything during that awards season
  • A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Only a few brain-teasers managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're modest productions, however the design of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
