The Mighty Nein, the newest animated series from the beloved role-playing group, revealed a new opening credits. It features the beloved group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues fighting hard and making their mark, while also hinting at multiple heart-wrenching personal histories for key figures such as the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
All in all, the intro appears amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was missing in the song choice.
The intro employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition composed by artist Colm McGuinness. It's a track from the official score of that title, the second one released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great sentimental option, and I believe that devotees of the sequel series will appreciate its presence.
Personally, The Mighty Nein's intro doesn't quite capture the excitement and excitement that was part of the show's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was first revealed in that year, and it only got better when cast member Sam Riegel added lyrics to the melody for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Including singing from one actress, another performer, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't even watched the second campaign yet, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my phone. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you start an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The show's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the same chords in my opinion. It's a grand composition, but from what I know of the group, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Naturally, the creators has already said that the animated show will have a few changes and differences from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its opening seems to be one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on Prime Video from Nov. 19. If you can't wait before that, or want a head start to get to know the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are available on the audio platform and the video site.
