The Showrunner Discloses He Has a Plan for How His Sci-Fi Series Will Conclude... For Now.

The acclaimed writer-producer never anticipated that Pluribus would emerge as a breakout success. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “It was unexpected the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”

Now that Season 1 of the hit program wrapping up—and Season 2 already in development—the creative team reflected on the audience reaction and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.

About the Tremendous Audience Reaction

Anyone might to get distracted by the constant speculation and fan theories about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is making a conscious effort to ignore the noise.

“It feels like constantly eating hot fudge sundaes and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's wonderful, but I hear about it anecdotally, and that's on purpose. I have never searched for my own name online, nor do I ever want to. It's quite the opposite. It's a rabbit hole I know I would disappear down and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”

Regardless of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s it's impossible to ignore the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The most practical strategy is to accept it graciously and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.

“It is not our goal to change the plot,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not changed by what people are saying.”

“We prefer to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan concludes.

A Pressing Query: Does the showrunner Have a Plan for the Finale of Pluribus?

Considering Gilligan and his team aren't taking cues by public opinion, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? Essentially yes… sort of.

“We've developed some potential directions about where the show might end up,” Gilligan reveals. “yet we stand ready to throw out a good idea for a better idea. This approach has served us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we conceive of something superior and I imagine we will be doing that.”

Alternatively, if plans fall through, director and writer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to serve as a last resort.

“I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and we're in there,” Smith quips, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Of course, why mess with the classics?

“I want Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes.

Pluribus is currently available on Apple TV+.
