Thrice-crowned National Basketball Association MVP Jokic endured a "gut-wrenching" injury to his knee as the Denver Nuggets lost by a score of 147-123 to the Miami Heat.

The Serbian center was hurt in the latter stages of the opening half during an unintentional coming together with teammate Spencer Jones.

The other player came down on the footwear of the big man, and he promptly collapsed to the ground holding his leg.

The 30-year-old, that tops the league season in boards and dimes, posted 21 points and eight assists in the game before suffering the injury.

The player is scheduled for an scan on Tuesday to assess the extent of the issue.

"Immediately, Jokic understood he was hurt," said Nuggets coach Adelman.

"This happens in professional sports. Any player that suffers an injury, that's difficult, especially somebody as important as Jokic. More information will come on Tuesday."

"We'll move on together. Clearly, at this moment, I am focused about Jokic as a person and the frustration of facing an event of that nature."
