According to a high-ranking defense official, the American military carried out a lethal strike on a vessel in the eastern Pacific, killing four people.
“A US joint task force carried out a deadly attack on a craft linked to a terrorist group in international waters. Intelligence confirmed the vessel was traveling along a known drug smuggling route and was engaged in narco-trafficking operations. A total of four male drug traffickers were killed, and no US military forces were injured.”
This announcement follows a day after an announcement regarding a naval blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. In that announcement on social media, the US president alleged Venezuela of using oil profits to fund drug trafficking and other crimes, pledging to escalate the military buildup.
Only on the previous day, the Pentagon stated it had conducted strikes on three boats it accused of smuggling narcotics in the Pacific, leading to the deaths of eight people. Beginning on 2 September, more than 20 strikes have killed at least 99 individuals, the majority off the coast of Venezuela.
The administration has encountered increasing demands to make public video of a 2 September vessel attack. However, officials have refused to do so. The administration has supported its efforts as a success, saying it has prevented drugs from entering US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is exceeding the bounds of legal military action.
Although the administration has stated the campaign is about stopping drugs destined for the US, remarks from a senior aide appeared to suggest a broader geopolitical aim. In a recent interview, the senior advisor remarked the leader “wants to keep on blowing boats up until the Venezuelan president surrenders or concedes.”
This indicates the military campaign may be part of a strategy to oust Venezuela's sitting government.
